Does Matthew Guy Support His Candidate’s Extreme Views On Climate Change?

Matthew Guy’s Liberal Party Candidate for Narre Warren North, Timothy Dragan, has been caught out as a climate change denier – with leaked audio recordings showing him railing against climate action.

Matthew Guy had to disendorse Liberal candidates for holding extreme views at the last election in 2018.

He now needs to explain what’s different this time around.

According to reports in The Age, Mr Dragan claimed he would cross the floor on any emissions reduction legislation, saying:

·        If the party wanted to go down “the whole clean energy line”, the Liberals should instead champion nuclear energy

·        “Alice Springs, easy,” – when asked where the resulting nuclear waste should be discarded

·        “If I win, I’m crossing the floor mate [on emissions reduction targets]. I don’t care. I’ll vote against it. This area doesn’t care about climate change.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio

“Timothy Dragan’s comments raise serious and concerning questions for Matthew Guy to answer. Does Matthew Guy agree the Liberals should be championing nuclear energy, and dumping nuclear waste in Alice Springs, where there is a sizeable Indigenous population?”

“Does Matthew Guy agree that Victorians don’t care about climate change? Would he accept these views in his party room?”

“Is Matthew Guy going to disendorse his climate change denier candidate – or is he happy to keep standing alongside him?”
