Building Better Schools For Muslim Students

A re-elected Andrews Labor Government will deliver $30 million to build and upgrade Islamic schools, as part of a $450 million fund to improve low-fee non-government schools.

We’ll work closely with the Islamic community to identify areas and existing schools that need the most investment – helping to make sure that no matter where Victorians choose to educate their kids, they’ll have access to a great local school.

Since we came to government, we’ve invested more than $12.8 billion to improve classrooms, upgrade facilities and build new schools in every corner of the state.

As our suburbs grow, there’s demand to build and expand non-government schools so they can meet the needs of their growing local communities – and that’s exactly why we’ll deliver $450 million to build and upgrade non-government schools across the state.

Multiculturalism makes our state fairer and stronger – and Bachar Houli is an example of that.

A re-elected Labor Government will also invest $950,000 to make the Bachar Houli Foundation bigger and better – enabling the foundation to continue the work they do to support Muslim Victorians in our schools.

This includes $200,000 to support the Bachar Houli Cup which engages more than 5000 students at Islamic schools through Aussie rules football to create a sense of belonging and harmony.

A further $750,000 over 3 years will support the Bachar Houli Foundation to develop young leaders within the Muslim community and provide an education platform for wider Australia. The foundation focuses on four key pillars of Engagement, Education, Employment, and Talent delivered through twelve unique programs across Australia.

Matthew Guy’s Liberals can’t be trusted when it comes to education or supporting our multicultural and multifaith communities.  When they were last in charge they cut more than $1 billion from the education budget and sought to divide our state with prejudice.

Only Labor is doing what matters – making sure every young Victorian gets a great education, no matter their background.

Quotes attributable to Premier Daniel Andrews

“We’ll make sure wherever you choose to send your kids to school they have access to first-rate facilities.”

“We know many families with children at low-fee schools scrimp and save to make ends meet – that’s why we’ll continue to support Islamic schools to make sure students have the support they deserve.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education Natalie Hutchins

“You can’t trust Matthew Guy’s Liberals when it comes to educating our kids – when they were last in charge, they cut more than $1 billion from the education budget, and Victorian families paid the price.”

“Only Labor is doing what matters and ensuring every Victorian child has access to a great local school, whether it’s government, Catholic, Islamic or independent.”
